Barcelona are reported to have joined the race for Toby Alderweireld should the defender be sold by Tottenham in the summer.
Contract talks between Alderweireld and Spurs have stalled, with the two parties said to be around £40,000 a week apart in negotiations.
The Belgium defender is under contract until 2019, with Tottenham holding an option to extend their agreement for a further year. But there is also a clause in Alderweireld’s current terms that would allow him to leave for just £25million in 18 months if no new deal is reached.
Manchester United are understood to be monitoring the situation, while The Independent also reports that Barcelona are interested.
Daniel Levy is said to be reluctant to sell to a domestic rival, which could strengthen Barca’s hand if Alderweireld is on the market this summer.
It was claimed last week that the 28-year-old is looking for wages of around £150,000 per week to extend his commitment at Spurs, who are willing to go only as high as £110,000 per week.
The Independent also suggests that Alderweireld’s camp are using Virgil van Dijk’s deal with Liverpool as the new benchmark for top defenders. The Reds new boy is said to be earning £180,000 per week.
